Fishermen, who have been agitating for the last 75 days demanding inclusion of their community in Scheduled Tribes, called off thier protest on Friday following an assurance from Minister K. Atchannaidu. In his presence, MP Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu offered lime juice to the protesters who were at hunger strike camp at Srikakulam Collector’s office. He said the government was taking all the steps for ensuring ST status for them while protecting the interests of tribals. The agitation assumed significance recently with the attack of hunger strike camp during the protests of tribals who strongly opposed inclusion of other castes in ST category fearing that it would affect their reservations.
