Collector N. Venkatesh said on Monday that enumeration was on at coastal villages in six taluks of the districts, including Thoothukudi, Tiruchendur and Sathankulam, to ascertain the number of fishermen missing in the wake of Cyclone Ockhi. Addressing media persons here, he said teams, led by Tahslidars and comprising Fisheries Inspectors, Village Administrative Officers, Panchayat Clerks and fishermen representatives from coastal villages, were involved in the process. The cyclone that struck Kanniyakumari on November 30 left two fishermen from Thoothukudi dead, and three others were still missing. The Collector said 1,143 banana growers, whose crop cultivated on 488.94 hectares suffered damage during the cyclone, would get compensation in two or three days. The money would be credited in their bank accounts. The government had allotted ?66.68 lakh for the district, and a compensation of ?13,500 per hectare would be issued to the farmers. A total of 1,070 banana growers had applied for availing themselves of the benefits of special livelihood rehabilitation package. Each affected banana farmer would get a subsidy of ?35,000 per hectare. In the first year, 75% of the subsidy would be provided and remaining amount would be disbursed the next year, he said.
