Fishermen in Rakhine State are worried by an artificial land-forming project, sources say. On July 12 the government invited domestic companies, through a state newspaper, to cooperate with the authorities in creating man-made land in Kyaukpyu. Kyaw Khin, fisherman in Kyaukpyu, said, “The local fishermen and their families will face many challenges if the man-made land is formed at the shore of Kyaukpyu. Over 3,000 residents are making a living on this shore. The fishermen are concerned that the project could make fishing areas disappear. The Kyaukpyu shore stretches about two miles, with fishing being the primary source of income for many residents.
