State run Felivaru Fisheries Complex Ltd announced Sunday that it will recommence exportation of its premium quality canned tuna after a year-long hiatus. The cannery situated in the island of Felivaru in Lhaviyani atoll currently cans 30-35 metric tonnes of tuna daily, only enough to meet the local demand after the exportation hiatus came into effect nearly a year ago. However, the number is expected to go up to 50 metric tonnes of tuna canned daily after exportation recommences, according to Felivaru Fisheries Complex’s assistant regional manager Hamid Nazeem. He said that the decision to come out of hiatus was taken following the cannery’s revamp with advanced facilities. Canning 50 tonnes of tuna per day amounts to 70,000 cans per month, that is 41 cargo containers. Nazeem stated that they will begin by exporting fish products to only the United Kingdom, with the company currently discussing to commence exportation to Australia as well. The improved facilities to the Felivaru cannery include a new defrosting system for frozen fish, two fish cookers and four brand new fish-cleaning lines among others.
