Fishermen’s identity cards (ID) were distributed among 600 fishermen in Meherpur Sadar upazila on Wednesday. The government took the initiative to bring the fishermen under different subsidised programmes of the government. Local lawmaker Farhad Hossain inaugurated the distribution of cards to the fishermen at a function at the Upazila Parishad auditorium this noon as the chief guest. Fisheries department distributed the ID cards among the fishermen under Fishermen Registration and ID Card Distribution project while the government of Bangladesh provided the fund, official sources said. Speaking on the occasion, Farhad Hossain said due to lack of their proper identities, the fishermen could not avail themselves of the government assistance. Fishermen community in the country has been given identity cards so that they get proper assistance from the government. Chaired by Upazila Nirbahi Officer M Mainul Hossain, it was addressed, among others, by district fisheries officer Sheikh M Mesbahul Haque, upazila fisheries officer Zakir Hossain, assistant commissioner (land) Suvra Das and fishermen’s representative Sadek Hossain Bablu, according to BSS.RH
