The Sindh government has decided to recognize fishermen as laborers, according to a TV channel on Wednesday. This decision will enable fishermen to benefit from labor laws, including social security schemes. The coastal belt of Sindh, where millions of fishermen depend on fishing for their livelihoods, will be particularly impacted.
The Department of Livestock and Fisheries has submitted a summary to the Chief Minister recommending this change. Currently, over 100,000 fishermen are registered with the Fish Harbour Authority and the Fisheries Department. The summary will be discussed at the upcoming Sindh Cabinet meeting, and if approved, the Sindh government will amend labor laws to officially classify fishermen as laborers.
